Castara, Tobago
May 7-14, 2022
Ready for a new and unique experience? Come join Freedom Journey Yoga Retreats for this delicious week in the warm and magnificent Caribbean island of Tobago. You’ll fly into Trinidad and then take a 25-minute puddle jumper to Tobago. There we’ll be staying in the most incredible retreat location for a full week of optional yoga, authentic Caribbean cooking, walks on the beach, a few meals ‘in town’, a waterfall walk, and more.
Located on Tobago’s quieter western coast, away from the island’s more populated south, in the small fishing village of Castara you’ll get a sense of the ‘real Tobago’. Whether your aim is to soak up the local culture, hang out on the beach, or appreciate the splendor of flora and fauna, Castara reveals its hidden gems to anyone seeking a Caribbean experience within an authentic and welcoming local community.
I’ve chosen this time of year for several reasons. The holidays are all over, the weather is more dependable for flying AND the flights are cheaper! The village is a little quieter, too.
*There are a limited number of spaces for this retreat. I encourage you to consider signing up soon.*
We’ll be staying in amazing Ecolodges with private baths and fully equipped kitchens in each. We will experience contemporary living and the blend of elegant interiors with natural elements. There are also studio and more upscale options available.
Castara has it’s own restaurant and we’ll be served 3 delicious meals per day, with the exception of one dinner and two lunches in the village, so we can explore a bit of the Castara community and even a little night life.
Caribbean Kitchen offers open-air dining with superb panoramic view towards the beach, ocean and rainforest. It is a magical spot for watching hummingbirds over a leisurely lunch, savouring the sunset over cocktails, or enjoying a candle-lit dinner, serenaded by the sound of the waves. We will be served inventive, wholesome food in a relaxed atmosphere.
What’s Included?
- 7 Nights Accommodations in your choice of selected Castara rooms/suites
- 3 Delicious Meals per day (with the exception of two lunches and a dinner in the village)
- Transfer from airport to Castara, and the return to the airport

- Yoga Props
- A walk to the waterfalls
- One evening and two daytime opportunities to explore the village, do some shopping, and have a meal.

- Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages besides coffee and tea (they are available at Castara, however)
- One dinner and two lunches out
- Gratuities (Note: there is not a big tipping culture in Trinidad and Tobago and tips are not expected for taxi service or housekeeping staff. That said, they are always welcome, but will be an individual choice. For restaurants, sometimes a service charge is added, and if not, 10%-15% tip is common).

2. Rainforest Walk and Birdwatching
Tobago’s stunning rainforest reserve encompasses fairy-tale forest that springs from Tobago’s spine. It feels a world away from Castara’s sandy beach. A guided walk through the rainforest can be a magical experience. Tobago has one of the highest densities of bird species in the world with some 220 varieties to be spotted, and whether you’re a seasoned twitcher or have never picked up somebinoculars before, observing the birds in their natural habitats around Castara is an absolute pleasure. This trip is coordinated by Newton George, recognised as one of the top ornithologist guides in the Caribbean. A trip out with him or one of his team is hugely memorable.
Cost of trip: $65 USD (reduced rates for groups of 10+)
Service Provider: Newton George or one of his team
Length of trip: Approximately 5 hours. Departure at 7am from Castara Retreats
3. Being With Horses
This German/Tobago-run stable is a wonderful alternative to staid trail rides. A non-profit outfit, it takes a holistic approach to looking after its herd of rescued mounts. Ridden with foam saddles andbitless bridles, the horses take you into Buccoo’s coastal woodland before emerging on the sand and swimming you through the calm waters of the bay.
Website: http://being-with-horses.com/
Maximum per group: 6 people
Price: $100 USD plus cost of taxi (45-60 mins) to the location ($600tt return for up to 4 people) Service provider: Veronika and Lennon run Being with Horses
Trip length: Approx 4-5 hours including travel (rides start at either 9am or 3pm)
4. Bioluminescence Stand Up Paddle Boarding/ Kayaking
Take a starlit night time tour of the lagoon with bioluminescent waters. Glowing Plankton in the ocean is one of the most unique things you will ever see. Jump in and watch the waters alight, leaving a glowing trail in your wake like magic!
Website: http://www.standuppaddletobago.com/
Price: $60 USD plus cost of taxi (45-60 mins) to the location ($600tt return for up to 4 people) Service Provider: Duane at Stand Up Paddle Tobago
Trip length: Approx. 5 hours, including travel (4:30 – 9:30pm)
5. Walk to Castara Waterfall (this we will likely do as a group but you can go on your own as well)
Castara is backed by the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere, and a safe and easy way to independently explore it is by following the village’s stream leading you into the deep green of rainforest. You?ll soon reach the Castara waterfall that cascades into a freshwater rock pool that will beckon you in for a dip. It’s a magical spot, and being off the beaten track for visitors to the island, you’ll often have the waterfall to yourself. Groups visiting previously have been enchanted by their walk to the waterfall. As this is an independent walk and there is no charge.
More
There are other options for “things to do” which include but are not limited to snorkeling (there is equipment for rent but not always available, so it’s recommended that you bring your own if this is huge on your “to do” list), scuba diving, an island tour (I, Sabré, would love to do this as a group if we have enough interest), a tour of the Cocoa Plantation, and various spa treatments.

A few things to think about:
~If you would like to come early or stay after the retreat ends, Castara will offer a special discount of 20% off their regular rates for May.
~Castara Resort and FJYR recommend that you obtain travel insurance, as soon as you book your flight, so that you are covered in the event of cancellation, illness, accidents, or loss of belongings and valuables.
~Transportation to Tobago:
Castara Resort recommends Simply Tobago’s page for information on flights to Tobago:
www.simplytobago.co.uk/getting-to-and-around-tobago/2016-flights-to-tobago/
If traveling from Trinidad, they strongly advise you book the transfer as soon as possible, as sometimes ferries and flights can become booked up for days at a time.
They recommend the Air Bridge flight which is a quicker alternative to the ferry – “only 24 miles, 24 minutes and $24” each way. Tickets can be booked through Caribbean Airlines who fly over 10 times per day.
To book your ticket, please visit: www.caribbean-airlines.com
For the list of official agents who sell ferry tickets, please visit: www.ttitferry.com
~Transportation to and from the Tobago airport are included in your package. I’ll be providing many more details as we get closer to the retreat date and everyone knows their flight schedule.
~Please check out Castara’s lovely website for more information. I especially encourage the ‘What to Expect’ page, which answers many FAQ’s. Also notable is their story on Sustainability. I love their “ethos.” You can see it all at castararetreats.com
~The currency in Tobago is TTD (or just tt) for ‘Trinidad and Tobago dollars’. $1 TTD is approximately $0.15 USD as of this writing. I encourage you to exchange your dollars for TTD at your bank before you leave home, if you decide to exchange, because the ATM is 45 minutes away from Castara. However, U.S. Dollars are widely used throughout Tobago.
~Castara and Freedom Journey Yoga Retreats will not be responsible in the case of lack of water and or power supply, gas or other unforeseen events beyond Castara Retreat’s control.
~Mosquitoes, lizards, ants and other insects are endemic residents. They are attracted by human presence and might be found in Castara Retreats. This is considered normal and the presence of any quantity of bugs in the outdoor areas shall not give rise to any liability of Castara Retreats. (I recommend bug spray for your person).
~Castara Retreats has locks but each visitor is responsible for ensuring the security of his/her belongings.
~About tipping, here’s what I’ve been told: There is not a particularly strong tipping culture in Tobago as in other parts of the world, and there is no expectation to tip for things like a taxi service, or excursions, like Paddleboarding. There isn’t an expectation for it, though it would always be welcomed if you wanted to offer something.
~As we approach the months before the retreat date, I’ll be providing more detailed information to help create ease in your traveling and retreat experience!
Please check out the lovely Castara website by clicking here
